“U” Is For Unknown

Whenever I come across a new area, whether in magical or mundane life, The Witch’s Pyramid guides me in knowing how to deal with the unknown and unfamiliar.

The Witch’s Pyramid consists of the admonitions — To Know, To Will, To Dare, and To Be Silent. These all lead to the peak which is: To Go.

When approaching something new it becomes very easy to see why these admonitions and guidelines give good advice.

When you approach anything unknown or unfamiliar, it pays to be cautious and pay attention to what is going on. In magic especially, if you are broaching new territory, you should study and become as familiar as you can before diving into the arena to test your might.

To Know means know what you are doing, why you are doing it, and know what the possible outcomes — good and bad — are.

To Will means to put all your intention, your focus, and your desire into what it is you’re trying to manifest. If you don’t have your Will locked in, then you’re straddling the fence. Magic is like an electrical current that will follow the path of least resistance. If the path of least resistance is a hem-and-haw Witch who isn’t focused on what she is doing, then guess where that power is going to zap. Learn what it means to involve your Will in your task.

To Dare means you are have studied and considered all the options and possible outcomes and you’re ready to push forward to get your results. To Dare means you have focused your Will and now you’re going to put your words into action. This does not mean you approach unknown or unfamiliar territory with false bravado, but rather with confidence and purpose. Even if it’s new and scary, you put your best foot forward and get the job done.

the wise are silentTo Be Silent means you don’t talk about personal business. When you talk about things that are personal, unless you know for certain that those you are sharing with have your best interests at heart, you open yourself up to doubt and ridicule. This specifically includes what you’re doing magical work for, what it’s about, and what you’re expecting from it. People wrongly think that magic is all a psychological game that people play on the weak-minded. They incorrectly believe that if someone threatens or talks about the scary stuff they are able to do, the fear of the intended target is enough to bring about whatever sort of disaster the ‘caster’ had in mind. That’s a game, and if it works for you, fine, but that’s all you’ll ever be able to do. Real intention and power rest in knowing what you’re doing, how to do it, and getting it done without the need to boost your ego by blabbing about it. The results will speak for themselves.
